Need a distraction from the ballgame gone to hell? John has our thoughts on Forrest Gump, a film that is deeply uncool to like but surprisingly underrated.

It's time for another installment of Rating Best Pictures with me and my Lt. Dan, @tylerharper.bsky.social. This time we're reviewing a movie that had the monoculture in an absolute chokehold in our adolescence: 1994's Forrest Gump. We've both seen this one many times but not recently (1/14)

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

There was no..ahem...graceful way of doing so.

Funny detail that didn't (for obvious reasons) make it into the story. As I was interviewing the reverend, Aziza shit in her carry box. The smell, as you might expect, cut the interview short.

On Saturday, a local church invited the public to have pets blessed during the annual Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Most were dogs, but one was a turkey named Aziza. I consider this story a gift from Heaven.

Very sad to hear about the passing of Comox Valley Record editor Terry Farrell, who died yesterday from cancer. Terry was a lovely person, an ardent Oilers fan, and spent his final year documenting his appreciation for all of life's joys, big and small. He will be very missed by his colleagues.

The resignations, which include two editors and two reporters based in Homer and Kenai, were scheduled to take effect in two weeks, but managers at Carpenter Media Group fired all four immediately.

A person just called me to ask why I wasn't covering the ostrich story, then pressed me on who paid for my training in journalism. She didn't really have an answer when I replied, "student loans."

Cup or Bust in the most literal terms.

Fascinating. I would obviously have preferred term, but this gives the Oilers plenty of cap space to work with before he gets that big pay day.

This is not the only piece of business Edmonton is doing today

Hearing the Oilers are also closing in on a 7x7M extension with the Pride of Armour Heights, Jake Walman

Big day for them
