Pain from the tugging, and scary words became too much. Vision blurred and tears spilled over. “I don’t want to go to the temple, Ma’m.” “You’re going.” Hair released, and the woman spun her. The look just added to her fear. “You must sacrifice Annelise. We all do. Make it a favourable one, something the God won’t expect. Otherwise you’ll end up in the fire realm for eternity.”

Whoever this was, he was skilled. Feet were exactly where they should be, grip firm but flexible. There was no choice, Mali had to capture the distance between them. He would make a mistake here at the end of the pole, his power draining with every drop of blood. And that would be the end of them both.
