A couple minutes research shows why.
A 2.5kg tin coat £4.99 in 1979. This year's plastic carton is 550g and costs £3.95 in Tesco.
If you take inflation into account, the 2.5kg tin would cost £24.87 so similar sort of prices to the 70s/80s.
