I love both dashes and semicolons. Dashes (usually en dashes in British usage, em in American) are great for adding visual pauses and emphasising the subsequent words. I actually fondly remember discovering as a teenager the uses and conventions of them.

I've just realised I can create the dashes I want with a long press on the hyphen on my phone keyboard – such as this en dash... But I don't think most people bother with that.

I don't remember my grandad; he died when I was three. But I'm told her never spoke about his experiences, and my aunt described him as "gentle".
