from point one of 'what do we learn from this'; a problem is that google / etc are now putting their generative AI nonsense at the top of search results, whether you want it to or not.
so generations who've grown up finding facts by 'googling and looking at the top result' are now being lied to.

I like how CIO's will look at this post and pat themselves on the back for doing the correct thing.

Surely you’re known enough that people either like your books or don’t? Do people read Amazon reviews for authors they already know?

why can't we just leave nostalgic things in the past where they belong? why do new ideas seem to be pushed to the sides for regurgitating things past?

I guess it's the Bbc execs asking ChatGPT how to do their jobs get 'refresh BagPuss' alongside 'prosecute disabled people for TV license payments'

so, they admit that it's not up to writing the film, even though word generation is what the tech is arguably best at? (and then is still pretty terrible)

Sometimes you can change to a different, cheaper plan and save on cancelling. I did this and then cancelled for a much reduced amount.
I’ve wondered how or if they’d peruse someone who just stopped paying.

'all the AI features you need' -- I think 2008R2 already has that covered. :D

It’s like Roblox, but without the grooming! Amazing find.

So many public services are throwing “AI” at their phone lines in such inept ways, then wondering why people are frustrated when they eventually get routed to a human.

I think the companies selling this trash must have great happy path demos and bribes for procurement managers.

It seems like so many plans are happy to begin making the easy part hard, without correspondingly making the hard part easy— so we just end up with things worse for everyone.

I think I'd go with 'E'; not for the don't care part, but the part where it's your feed to do with what you will. If you need to rage one day, rage. If you don't feel like facing the horrors of the world the next, then choose the adventures of kittens that day.

Cloudflare being as low cost as possible with a familiar DNS interface (having used them in previous jobs) and the free, easy mail forwarding really wins it for them IMO for personal projects / helping family manage their sites.

fwiw I tried searching for your podcast on Audible and couldn't find it; can see some other podcasts on there (eg. .netrocks from richard campbell/carl franklin) so there must be some open route onto it.

I don’t use Facebook or Instagram other than to share family photos with family. Every time I open those apps, it’s just rolls and rolls of garbage.
I tried looking at threads and it’s even worse than Twitter.
Bluesky does seem to just be the way now.

Is that what feeds into Audible’s podcasts, or is that a separate thing? I can imagine it’s a vestigial thing for Amazon before Audible became the monopoly they’ve made it.

How dare an author... (checks notes) die before finishing the fiction series I like?
Get a grip, people. Enjoy what's there and stop being an entitled clown.

You’d think if it happens that frequently someone would put up a sign… though even with that many people blindly follow satnavs nowadays.

I know your work most from Warcraft and StarCraft, however the first thing of yours I read back in the 90s was your 7of9 Voyager novel that I found when visiting my parents house and was surprised at the name, then went on to read your other Voyager novels.
