Live recordings show neural activity in hippocampal assembloids derived from patient stem cells. In the healthy control (left), neurons fire independently. In the assembloid with the SCN8A gene variant (right), neurons fire together in sudden flashes — an abnormal pattern associated with seizures.

Using #stemcell models, @ucla.edu scientists find how epilepsy genes disrupt different brain regions. The study establishes the first hippocampal assembloid model, creating a new platform for studying epilepsy, autism and Alzheimer’s disease.

These findings suggest that both blood stem cells and their environments should be considered to develop more effective interventions that improve overall blood production as we age, helping people live healthier for longer.

First, inflammatory responses within blood stem cells themselves reduce their ability to produce blood cells of all kinds. Second, inflammatory signaling in the surrounding milieu — the cells that support blood stem cells — directly impacts the types of blood cells produced.

Aging is associated with chronic inflammation and altered blood cell production, reducing immunity and increasing blood cancer risk. Dr. Jennifer Chia and team find that chronic inflammation plays two distinct roles in blood system aging.
