extremely poorly was an understatement! they are not just getting it wrong but making it worse (especially for trans people, as is their wont). my intention isn't to correct the overall sentiment, but we really do not know what the shooter was thinking.

the papers could and should be covering groypers and online radicalization and terrorism more generally, but that would require both pissing off the people in power and terrifying everyone else.

i agree that NYT et al. are covering this extremely poorly but it is not confirmed that he is a groyper (could be! but there are other horrifying possibilities). basing this on the comments of @swordsjew.bsky.social @iwriteok.bsky.social and @garbageday.email's most recent post and podcast.
