The majority of total flights continue to stream into the 🇬🇧 UK, likely unchecked for forced labor.

In addition to direct flights to London (STN), Bournemouth (BOH), and Cardiff (CWL), new routes take goods to Birmingham (BHX) and the East Midlands Airport (EMA).

Flights landing in EU cities should raise concerns with European lawmakers ahead of the Forced Labour Regulation coming into effect in 2027.

Urgewald research shows China developing 21 coal-chemical facilities, many in the Uyghur Region.

Such facilities convert coal into fuels + industrial chemicals like synthetic gas, methanol, and plastics through highly energy-intensive processing.

We found a surge in cargo flights, from nearly none in early 2024 to 40+ per week in mid-2025.

Cargo planes fly direct to London, Bournemouth, Cardiff, Bucharest, and Budapest; and indirect to cities including Athens, Leipzig, Liège, Vienna, Tallinn, Zurich.

Air cargo flights from the Uyghur Region to Europe went from virtually none to 40+ every week from June 2024 to May 2025, according to the analysis.

Nine cargo carriers operated regular flights in that period (some direct, others indirect) through Central Asia and Turkey.

The Kashgar subzone of the Xinjiang Pilot FTZ represents a "space of exception," where the conditions of labor should come under scrutiny. Given the involvement of the Third Division of the XPCC, coerced labor in the supply chain running through the FTZ is likely.

China has tried for years to transform the region into an export-driven manufacturing hub through initiatives like Open up the Northwest (1990s), Western Development (2000s), and the Belt and Road Initiative (2010s), but FTZs are a newer development.
