A short clip from my Hornet Robberfly fact file video, where I where I tell the story of how I ended up obsessed enough to spend every free sunny day walking around a field near my house looking at horse poo trying to film them!

And Instagram is terrible now for photos now (500 views) and video not much better (1500ish usually), until I posted a video of an emerging damselfly last month which is randomly on 1.7million views and counting! No idea WTF happened there!?
But bluesky is best for engagement overall I find

I have 1700 followers on TikTok but get the standard 300-700 views on videos, even those made in app, even though some of them get 5+ new followers!?
Funny thing is I post the video the TikTok app makes on my instagram and YT as a short which both had similar follower numbers and get 1500+ views!

Is this what the right wing loudmouths meant by "no go areas in London" !? Lol

10minute walk in a country park along path bordering (a thankfully fenced off) SSSI.
- 9 bird species seen/heard
- 25+ dogs, walked off lead with owners busy chatting or looking at their phone.

I used to moan about the lack of access to the river here, but now I'm glad its protected!

The bit the plastic grass sellers don't tell you!
@shitlawns.bsky.social
Post on facebook group "Any fake grass professional cleaners ? We hoover it, wash it, brought the fancy tools even before but it just looks flat & crap 😑 would love someone to come & revive it ?" Comment on the post "Have you tried electric artificial grass sweeper? Get one for around £150 , (Amazon) had mine for years brings my grass up lovely I even get stripes and it picks up all loose debris saves all that hand racking"

Reply from original poster " I tried this but it made it uneven because it sucked up a load of the concretey stuff underneath 😫"

Took a break today between trying to sneak up on Hornet Robberflies to film these Firebugs feasting on a dead Earwig - got the probe lens out for the last clip

I only see/hear Willow Warblers on passage here in South Essex, pretty much Chiffchaff only zone now.
Similar situation with dragonflies - new species come in but White-faced Darter no longer in the South, and Azure Hawker + Northern Damsel seem to be facing competition as other species spread north

They certainly seem to have changed somewhat from the "we need cull Birds of Prey!" Charity they once were. They seem to have quietly relieved all the trustees with shall we say "old fashioned attitudes" (such as below) of their roles which is good to see raptorpersecutionuk.org/2020/11/02/c...
Charity ‘Songbird Survival’ still pushing for licences to kill birds of prey
In an uncertain world there’s one thing you can always rely on – Songbird Survival seeking licences to kill birds of prey. Here’s the most recent call to arms, which looks virtual…

Last time BTO did a study like this for Songbird Survival (Trust as it was then) they found that corvids could be a local issue but were not behind the national decline in songbirds. And Songbird survival disowned the study!

One of my favourite insects, the Hornet Robberfly sucking the insides out of another fly from last weekend!
Taken at the only reliable colony in the Essex that's not been built on or under direct threat from development :(

Dune Villa 'twerking' as @flygirlnhm.bsky.social describes it!
- possibly filmed for the 1st time?

Took me over an hour to film this much footage because the ruddy thing just keep fly and flying and flying, fast and low and stop for about a second before flying and flying....

I wasn't expecting this one over the weekend in the #NewForest. Momentarily questioning my choices when I enthusiastically shouted out 'Praying Mantis' in the company of some great natural historians! Fortunately, it transpires I was right!! Mantis religiosa I believe. #Surprise #Naturalhistory

- Upload high quality wildlife video recorded on my camera but partly filmed/edited in TikTok: 3-500 views

- Upload poor quality video but filmed in TikTok app: 3-900 views

- Upload either of these TikTok video files to my YouTube channels as shorts: 1000s of views!

I don't get TikTok! lol
