Sadly to true. Trump isn't the cause of the current nightmare, he's just the most obvious, most visible symptom. Project 2025 is like Japanese Knotweed, it's not enough to remove the visible plant growth, the whole root system needs to be addressed.

Not a Luddite. And this sort of over-reliance on AI means that people won't develop the skills required to be able to question/validate the output of AI. It's a tool to assist, not replace, critical thinking.

I wasn't suggesting a direct replacement, because, as you noted, it wouldn't fit. But a derivative using some of the tech - derived from that used in Ariane - might be a jump start, and an alternative to potentially having to try and clone some US tech. Regardless, we shouldn't rely on US D5s

Absolutely. Trump's second term should act as a wake up call that the UK, Europe and other nations that have historically relied upon the US for defence equipment need to accelerate their disengagement, and that cooperation is key. An M51 derivative might be a starting point for Trident replacement.

Has anyone let Carswell know that the fiefdom of Normandy was established for some Viking geezer called Hrólfr? Better known as Rollo he was the ancestor of William the Bastard. Heck, Normandy is an allusion to "Norseman" aka Vikings.

He's also a supporter of the Republican party, so bollocks like this coming from him is no surprise.

A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch's Dune : an Oral History by Max Evry gives a fascinating insight into what went wrong and right with Lynch's Dune.

And with an interesting flip when you work out just who is filling which one of the classic Bond film roles (Bond, Bond girl, Super Villain).

Seems like a lot of genuinely unpleasant people to the west of the Pond...

How the f*&k can someone spend £37k on a wedding? When myself and my late wife got married nearly 30 years ago we didn't spend a tenth of that, and still had an excellent wedding and honeymoon. Is spending this amount matrimonial willy waving?

Big fan of Hull Trains, not just for low prices, but also because I've always found their staff to be the most friendly. Living between Sheffield and Doncaster I'll always use the latter for journeys to London, though whether the Aurora's improve the EMR route direct remains to be seen.

Hull Trains named their Paragons in 2022, less than 3 years after the first, 802301 entered service in Nov 2019, being named Amy Johnson in Oct 2022. The last, 802305, entered service in 2020 and was named Humber Bridge in Nov 2022.

That is chuffing awesome.

In 2003 it would be hard to imagine the lawyer who defended one of the Fairford Five (of Trident Ploughshares) would lead a government that proscribed Palestine Action, but a couple of years later he supported the extradition of Gary McKinnon (blocked by May of all people). 2011 was no surprise.

I can well imagine. As Bob's become a cynical-burned-out 40-something manager I've followed the same course, albeit 20 years older than our favourite BOFH.

Just realised it's over 20 years since I first met Bob lurking in the shrubbery outside Memetix. Where have those decades gone...

I see Thatcher's tea boy is as batshit loopy as ever.

Stunning. And glad the mold has performed as well as you hoped.

Masochism? 😀

Not a phrase I ever expected to read in my lifetime. You've a stronger stomach than me, I gave up trying to watch after a couple of minutes. Sure, it helps to stay informed, but I enjoyed my lunch too much to throw it straight back up.

Especially a game that isn't really that good, and that could have been so much better at making a point or being a commentary. The developer(s) should be thankful for the free publicity.

I expected a bit more nuance from you, Ian. Whether or not you agree with the decision Steam (and Epic) have made, it's not just Steam being a "petty little censor" for no good reason. Maybe direct some of your ire at Steam's payment processor, Visa, as it's their rules.
