The UK is launching a massive tree planting programme, with two new national forests & planting millions of new trees.

But what is the best way to grow forests? Is it by planting new trees or by allowing trees to spread naturally, or a combination of both?

Impact and insight note from TreE_PlaNat @uktreescapes.bsky.social project is out! Natural colonisation can successfully create structurally diverse woodlands and can be combined with tree planting to reduce the uncertainty of using natural processes alone www.uktreescapes.org/wp-content/u...

Our new #TreeDivNet paper led by Hernán Serrano-León is out in @globalchangebio.bsky.social! Using data from 9 forest diversity experiments across Europe, we showed that tree diversity effects on tree growth responses strengthened during consecutive drought years dx.doi.org/10.1111/gcb....

Our new study in @science.org shows that over half of forests have become more fragmented since 2000, threatening biodiversity and climate.

Brilliantly led by @yibiaozou.bsky.social as part of his PhD — and a huge team effort from @crowtherlab.bsky.social 👏

There are a myriad of ways that trees have shaped human behaviour, from shaping sleep to using its products to power our consciousness and societies, as this article shows. In turn, our behaviours can help trees perform vital functions such as pollination.

Expanding treescapes needs community buy in. What's the best way of achieving this? One of our projects found that storytelling and citizen mapping was the best way, and both of these achieved different, beneficial results.
