At their heart is an A7 chord, they just give a little extra something. If you have a song & that A7 sounds incredible played as an A9, use the A9. Remember the golden rule: if it sounds good, it is good.

This is a great time to point out that if you see an A7 chord in a chart you are not mandatorily required to play a strict A7. A9, A7b9, A13, etc are all still A7 type chords.
