1. CD at Oxford
2. Galápagos finches lacked island-specific tags (finches were not crucial for CD's ideas!)

#OTD 250 years ago, James Cook named the New Year Port in Isla de los Estados (Staten Island) and the New Year Island (nowadays Isla Observatorio). Here he collected the type specimen of several birds, including the Magellanic Penguin, the Striated Caracara and the Upland Goose.

Further, the mortality rate of chicks may increase -via starvation- because of penguin predation by sea lions (when the adults come from the ocean to feed their chicks). All this (and more!) happens in the incredibe Observatorio Island 🇦🇷, were we just started a new 5-year project

Striated caracaras would regularly enter Magellanic penguin burrows to scavenge dead chicks. We're trying to quantify this small-sized carrion input to see how important this behavior may be, as some individuals seem highly specialized—systematically checking burrows for failed nests

I have mainly worked with raptors 🦉, but also ants 🐜, plants 🌳 and mammals 🦊. I love going to the field, but I'm totally eager to pursue an analysis/writing reports-only position. Any info is very much appreciated. Thanks for sharing!

Spatial analyses, stable isotopes, GIS, individual-based modeling, and frequentist statistics are some tools used in my recent papers; I've also used genomic-based phylo/demographic modeling in some that are in review/writing stage. I use R, UNIX, NetLogo and Jupyter, but I can learn others!
