The other two are cheeky interlopers, two of our books: Kalle Lasn’s Manifesto for World Revolution & Six Inches of Soil. Which we hope will play a small part in the identifying & carrying out the work. @adbusters.bsky.social

Don Hall distils his long experience in the Transition Movement to provide, in The Regeneration Handbook, a toolkit to develop both personal & wider community resilience.

In Small Farm Future, Smaje makes a compelling case for a future centred on local, small-scale, agroecological farms providing not just our food, but central points around which we can reconnect with each other & the land. It is a future I want to be in.

I see in the other books suggestions for the work Hine encourages us to undertake. Krznaric’s History for Tomorrow identifies & details 10 examples from history that have something to teach us, to equip us for the near future, such as the regenerative, circular economy of Edo-era Japan.

He offers four. (1) Salvaging as much of the good as possible. (2) Mourning the good we can’t. (3) Identifying the things that aren’t good, & happily walking away from them. (4) Reviving skills currently thought of as obsolete.

Hine’s At Work in the Ruins often left me staring into space, mind whirring, no longer looking at the page. In many ways it is a difficult read (not the writing, that is top notch, but the ask). Hine asks what is the work worth doing among the ruins of our ‘civilisation’.

Jancovici’s World Without End is a wonderfully illustrated graphic novel that pulls no punches & makes it abundantly clear what a pickle we are in. The power of such well-crafted illustrations & simple story telling is a great tool for reaching those less fond of the written word.

Conway, in Material World details the histories of 6 key materials – sand, salt, iron, copper, oil & lithium – and our relationships & reliance on them. He illustrates (1) how complex & interconnected our global economy is & (2) how immense the task will be to use less materials.

These 📚 have been occupying us recently. Two aside, they have something in common – the authors were guests on podcasts we love: @natehagens.bsky.social Great Simplification, www.thegreatsimplification.com, and Oliver Goshey’s Regenerative Skills, regenerativeskills.com.
