To prevent that fate from befalling upon a human, an animal, typically a dog due to their loyalty and symbolism as protectors, was used instead.

The metaphor of the Church Grimm is used throughout the piece. Grimms are beings who were killed in order to be buried first in a graveyard, as it was believed the first thing to be buried would come back to guard the location.
