Good to see Andrew Bailey standing up to the 'growth at all costs' agenda which is underpinned by reckless deregulation.

Since 2008 we've created a host of new financial safeguards to make sure we don't repeat those mistakes.

We mustn't now tear those down.

Bank of England governor urges caution over financial deregulation for growth
The speech effectively argued that while growth is important, regulation is needed to prevent another banking crisis.

What would a Reform UK gov. mean for the creep of Big Tech in Britain?

Spoiler: It's not good news for online safety or democracy -even if they do claim to represent 'the people'

Reform spent the summer hammering home the need for protection from immigrants - and it worked.

But while Farage talks of protecting women, his party is working to dismantle genuine protections that keep communities safe.

We need to reclaim 'protection'. Here's how we do it 👇

Reform UK has hijacked the language of ‘protection’ – now progressives must reclaim it

'Delivery, delivery, delivery' is never going to be enough to hold off the threat from Reform.

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social needs a stronger message and a better narrative ✅ Worker protections is a key agenda they could be leaning into to do just this.

4/4 For progressives, the opening lies in recognising that although Reform voters are far from reliably left-wing, there is clear space to win support.

Especially if framed as upholding community interests > big corporate interests

3/4 But, whilst 'Red' voters support a strong state...

✅ Pro redistribution
✅ Pro benefits
✅ Pro taxation (especially corp)
✅ Pro worker protections

...'Blue' voters want a stripped back state

❌ Public sector workers
❌ Powerful unions
❌ Private sector regulation
❌ Taxation and redistribution
unchecked-uk.bsky.social
2/4 Reform voters are often seen as small-state, libertarians, but they often support interventions to regulate big corps.

✅ 74% say big businesses take advantage of ordinary people
✅ 71% support nationalisation of key industries
✅ 68% support banning zero hours contracts

1/4 What unites Reform UK's coalition? And where do the cracks emerge..?

Part 2 of our analysis finds three main things unite Farage's coalition:

✅ Pessimism and disillusionment
✅ Cultural grievances
✅ Distrust of big (foreign) business

👏 It's a new initiative looking at the rise of the Populist Right.

⏰ Next week we're releasing Part 2. What unites these groups, and where the cracks in Reform's coalition emerge..?

Who are Reform UK's 'red' and 'blue' voters? (Part 1)
Reform UK is often painted as a party of older, small-state, Brexit voters — but our research suggests the reality is more complex

2/3 Our analysis suggests Reform can be split into two tribes:

🔹 'Blue' voters - often from petty bourgeoisie, favour a smaller state, anti income redistribution and benefits, 💙 Thatcher

♦️ 'Red' voters - more working class, want Gov to redistribute income, ⬆️ private sector regulation

1/3 Reform UK is often painted as a party of small-state, Brexit voters 🇬🇧 — but our research shows the reality is more complex

They often support:

✅ Nationalising utilities
✅ Regulating corporates
✅ Stronger rules for elites

Hardly textbook libertarianism.

“There’s an empty space in politics", said Green leadership challenger Zack Polanski.

And it's Reform UK that is currently filling that space. But their deregulatory rhetoric is at odds with the strong protections voters care about.

Here's our opportunity.

Economically progressive policies enjoy high levels of popular support ✅

However, as economic challenges mount, it's the populist right that's benefiting from public disconnect ❌

Labour has stood firm on its pledge to boost worker protections - but they are barely talking it. Without a strong story behind them, their reforms are vulnerable.

We need a strong narrative on worker protections. Come to our event with @neonuk.bsky.social to help shape it.

Labour knows regulation is important to voters. They've held firm on the worker protections agenda despite strong lobbying.

So why are they talking the same deregulatory language we've heard for the last 15 years. If they want to be the party of change, they need a new narrative on regulation.
unchecked-uk.bsky.social
After a decade of budget cuts for key regulators and constant 'red-tape challenges', Labour is missing a golden opportunity to reset the narrative on regulation.

These initiatives have failed to deliver growth, and instead have created a dangerous enforcement gap across our economy.
unchecked-uk.bsky.social
🌹 Labour sounds more like the 🙆‍♂️ Tories each day. Their attack on NHS England last week got this response:

Sun: 'We couldn’t be happier'

Mail: 'The rhetoric will have gladdened the heart of any small-state Conservative'

Telegraph: 'it's most welcome'

Times: 'Streeting is doing the right thing'
unchecked-uk.bsky.social
3/3 The PM risks repeating these same mistakes.

Rather than slashing vital protections, Labour should focus on well-enforced regulations that protect the public and our environment, as well as giving businesses the confidence to invest for the long-term. That's the real path to sustainable growth.
unchecked-uk.bsky.social
2/3 If deregulation had been the answer to Britain’s economic woes under the Conservatives, we would surely be thriving after 14 years of experiments in slashing ‘red tape’.

Instead the UK economy has performed poorly 📉 ❌
unchecked-uk.bsky.social
Research shows Labour's worker protection agenda is overwhelmingly popular. And it could be crucial in the battle against Reform.

So why isn't the gov shouting about it?

It's time they told a bold story on the economy and owned the narrative on worker protections. More here👇 👇

Labour held firm on the worker protections agenda. So why aren’t they shouting about it?
Championing this agenda could expose the unpopular ideas behind Reform UK, and tell a compelling story about the economy
