How was your no-buy day? (2/28). Mine was nice. I didn’t voluntarily buy anything. (Have to check the auto-pay bills!) It was a good day… a little quieter and more peaceful since my head was not filled with decisions about purchases.

If underconsumption was a New Year’s resolution, then it might be forgotten by now. Hang in there! Just like diet and exercise, we have to break the myth that one bad day ruins the plan. Continue to simplify and look for smart ways to decrease
consumption.

At work, I’m trying to build the habit of drinking a big (re-useable) bottle of water each day. This is a win-win-win-win. I drink enough water,
I avoid the free coffee/tea/sugar/snacks in the break room, I get up and walk to fill it, and no disposable material.

It’s difficult to make big changes quickly and make them stick. “Never” and “cold-turkey” lead to cravings and giving up on the plan.
Better if I focus on waiting to buy stuff, and being patient. Any impulse buy; food treats, clothes, gadgets, should wait a day it two.

Maybe just eating a little less is good. Probably 50% of what I eat is in the “want” category, not a “need.” Am I really going to die of starvation if I don’t eat that cookie? But it’s soo good! Wait till tomorrow to have that cookie.

If I want to buy something, it’s helpful to me to wait a day. There’s a lot of things that I think are reasonable to buy, and I need them, but after waiting a day it feels different. Maybe it was a want and not a need.

“Everything in moderation… including moderation.” It’s okay to splurge sometimes and go to a nice restaurant or whatever.
But I’m trying to break the habit where I have to buy stuff every day. Just need to slow down and not buy that thing today.

It can be good to cancel subscriptions such as Amazon Prime or Walmart+. I’m forced to think about each purchase carefully. Is it worth shipping fees or driving to the store to buy it the old-fashioned way?
Each purchase costs a bit more time and money.Maybe that’s good!

The idea is to break the addiction where we have to buy, consume, watch something, play an app every free minute of every day.
Then we can savor and enjoy things.

For example, reduce food for a day by skipping breakfast, eating a simple home-made sandwich for lunch, then basic beans and rice for dinner.

I like to get freebies sometimes. I have all the gas station apps that give free stuff such as monster energy drink, or oatmeal snack bar or whatever.
I am cutting back on the free stuff. Is it really nourishing? Even if it’s free for me, it costs something to make it.

Step 1: Drive fewer miles, save a trip to the store here and there. Maybe a gallon of milk can wait till tomorrow?
Step 2: Consolidate errands to once or twice per week. Plan it out.
Step 3: Sell the car if possible. Does walking, uber, zip car, public transportation work?

Then next December, you de-corate and remove the stuff from the basement and put it upstairs.

It’s like extreme saving, but it’s not just to save money and get good value. To be successful, it pretty much requires to consume less.
