Probably just cynicism on my part but my guess is they did the math and don't think there would be enough outcry from their base if any of the strikers die.

I've got like 1300 hours in the game. My recommendation is custom for 1st playthrough, dark urge for second, then whichever is your favourite companion for 3rd.
