martin heidegger, the question concerning technology
"We will, as we say, 'get' technology 'intelligently in hand'", Heidegger proclaims with rich irony. "The will to mastery becomes all the more urgent the more technology threatens to slip from human control." This is correct, but "the correct always fixes upon something pertinent in whatever is under consideration" - and "by no means needs to uncover the thing in question in its essence." "Wherever ends are pursued and means are employed, wherever instrumentality reigns, there reigns causality." As example of standing-reserve, he asks if the Rhine (of Hölderlin's hymn) is still a river in the landscape. "Perhaps. But how? In no other way than as an object on call for inspection by a tour group ordered there by the vacation industry." It "appears to be something at our command." ". . . the revealing never simply comes to an end," Heidegger explains of what the technological processes we employ do with the material we tear away from nature. This becomes the focus of our reality and our truth and our life - "regulating and securing even become the chief characteristics of *the revealing that challenges.*" this is much longer... i will note: nowhere does man today any longer encounter himself, i.e., his essence. the essay ends: "for questioning is the piety of thought."
