In a 1959 interview, screened in part at SerlingFest, Serling spoke about a teleplay he’d written inspired by the murder of Emmett Till. By the time the censors were finished with it, he said, it “bore no relationship at all to what we had purported to say initially.” Any mention of race was removed, the setting shifted from the South to New England; even Coca-Cola bottles were struck from the set, out of fear viewers would connect the soda to the South. “I think it’s criminal that we’re not permitted to make dramatic note of social evils as they exist, of controversial themes as they are inherent in our society,” Serling said.

The stories are– they said 97% bad. So, they gave me 97, they’ll take a great story, and they’ll make it bad. See, I think that’s really illegal, personally.” It is unclear where Trump got the 97% figure from. Even if true, such criticism is protected speech under the First Amendment. He later added, “So, I think it’s very sad, but I think reporting has to be at least accurate, at least accurate to an extent. Again, when somebody is given, 97% of stories are bad about a person. That’s no longer free speech. That’s no longer anything. That’s just cheating. And they cheat, and they become really members of the Democrat national committee. That’s what they are, the networks, in my opinion. They’re just offshoots of the Democrat national committee.”

My mom asked for some recommendations on news sources. She is a LA Times / NY Times reader who doesn't use social media. Trying to give her some options she can handle without overwhelming her. This is the list I sent her. Any extra recommendations appreciated
Democracy Now: https://www.democracynow.org Very progressive news coverage that is quite detail oriented. Amy Goodman has been the lead reporter since before I was in college. They have a daily news segment on youtube that I sometimes watch: https://www.youtube.com/democracynow NPR: https://www.npr.org I mostly listen to them on the radio but they have good articles too sometimes. They're currently under direct threat of being defunded by Trump along with PBS. Wired: https://www.wired.com Focused on technology news but they have some very good coverage of the technology side of the current political and humanitarian crisis in the US. Bolts: https://boltsmag.org Excellent detail oriented US political coverage. Rolling Stone: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/ Rolling Stone (the rock magazine) has surprisingly good and consistent coverage of US politics. The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/us The Guardian has some dedicated US news & politics coverage that's quite good, as well as good global coverage.
