Renowned sean-nós singer Orla Ní Fhinneadha has been appointed '25-'26 Sean-Nós Singer-in-Residence at University of Galway’s Centre for Irish Studies. Orla, from Baile na hAbhann, Co Galway, has many singing titles to her name, including coming third in the Corn Uí Riada at the Oireachtas in 2016.

It will offer state-of-the-art facilities for teaching & research, including tutorial & seminar rooms, study spaces, research labs and offices. As part of our sustainability goals, the design includes plant systems & solar PV panels to enhance energy efficiency & reduce environmental impact.

The new facility is to be built on our south campus, a short distance from the Quadrangle. The design runs over four storeys, covering approx 3,925sq metres, and is integrated, via a glazed atrium link, with the existing Block E, a protected structure of historical & architectural significance.

Imirce, our emigrant letters project, featured on the History Show on RTÉ Radio 1 on Sun 14 Sept. Participants included Marie-Louise Rouget, the project’s digital archivist, & Helen Hayes-Sweeney, who used material in the Imirce database for her MA in History.

Used as the standard method for measuring electrical inductance for much of the 20th century, the Anderson Bridge refined how inductance was understood and taught and became a cornerstone in engineering education and practice worldwide.

IEEE - the world's largest technical professional organisation advancing technology for humanity - has formally dedicated an IEEE Milestone for the Anderson Bridge which was developed at the University in 1891 by Professor Alexander Anderson.
