I CONFESS that I ripped the following from elsewhere (but there was no source....so feel free to provide one if you have it). This information needs to be spread to educate people on HOW TO DEAL WITH INSURANCE COMPANY'S AUTOMATIC REFUSALS OF CLAIMS.
This is a medical hack for when your doctor orders a test or treatment and your insurance company denies it. That is a typical cost-saving ploy used by the insurance company. Here is your next step: (1) Call the insurance company and tell them you want to speak to the HIPAA Compliance/Privacy Officer (they're federally required to have one). (2) Ask that person for the names and credentials of every person accessing your record to make that decision of denial. By law you have a right to that info. (3) The insurance company will almost always reverse the decision very shortly rather than admit that the committee is made of low paid high school grads looking at "criteria words" and making decisions to deny your care. Even in the rare case that the refusal decision was made by medical personnel, it is unlikely that it was made by a board certified doctor in that specialty, and the insurance company doesn't want you to know that. (4) Any refusal should be reported to the US Office of Civil Rights (OCR.gov) as a HIPAA violation.
