Watched Buffalo '66 tonight and it confirmed yet again that (unfortunately) shitty people can make interesting art.
For as much as the term "Lynchian" is tossed around, I'm shocked I've never seen anyone compare this film to his work.

Watched Seconds tonight with @toyarchivist.bsky.social. Absolutely floored. Knew we were in for a treat right from the opening sequence (Saul Bass!) where close ups of facial features are distorted, mirrored, and off-set like a moving cubist painting.
Never heard of it before tonight! What a thrill
A collage of the opening sequence in Seconds (1966). Every image is an extreme close up of a facial feature incredibly skewed, doubled up, or distended. It's like a very serious version of a mid-90s video game ad. A haunting image of a bandaged face that manages to look ghostly while also making me think of those old stained glass images of the saints with their halos. The surgical lamp poking out from behind this monster's head giving the same effect - very cool The protagonist (played by Rock Hudson) gazes at a picture of his former face (surgically scrubbed from existence and socially obliterated with a faked death) while also being caught in a mirror reflecting the new. He looks tremendously sad. Extreme close up of a man's face from a tense tracking shot set in Grand Central Station. The film uses a bunch of insanely tight steady cam shots that look like modern GoPro footage you'd see at some Red Bull sponsored sporting event. 1966! COOKING!

Watched Xanadu with @toyarchivist.bsky.social the other day and now all we can do is say "we are in Xanadu" back and forth and nod sagely at each other
Olivia Newton John outlined in electric purple light AS SHE SHOULD BE Olivia and Michale Beck (the guy from The Warriors) out in front of the rebuilt Xanadu night club/roller rink (?) at night. The building is a classic in the Streamline Moderne style, like something you'd see in a Batman comic, and its swooping embellishments are illuminated with neon blue light. Fun fact, both me and my wife though this building was a matte painting the first time they showed it, but NO! It was a real building that burned down in the late 80s! Beck looks longingly at Olivia across time and space, as depicted by blowing orange lines out of your wildest coke-fuled disco dreams

The Fright Zone is my Platonic ideal of a playset. Flavorable enough to be fun, not so branded to entirely direct play. A few neat looking places to position a figure, let the imagination take the rest.
I like the vibe of the original 1985 one better (pictured), but this is still pretty sweet
the original playset. More stripped down, no ScArY faces built into the tree and staircase Sick box art of the original. He-Man battles a giant serpent rushing at him from under the stairway. Buzz-Off is imprisoned behind solid wood bars. Skeletor loses a fight to a tree. It's perfect.

Writing about Fallout 3 and thinking about all the strange one-off encounters and "hero" art pieces in the game. The stuff that makes a game take up residency in your head. No amount of procedurally generated grind will ever come close.

I read this more than 8 years ago and still think about it all the time (From an essay by Cara Ellison "How to Write About a Game")
Text - When you play a game you can take notes, but I prefer to let the game impress its virtues and mistakes on me, and record them with screenshots. It’s good to take a great deal of time over pottering through the game, and it’s also good to go out of your way to try to break the game or do what you suspect the game doesn’t want or expect you to do, since those things wrench open the hood and let you see the engine working inside. If you do what the game developers expect you to do the experience is sometimes streamlined in a soulless manner, and you start to feel like you fell into the Small World ride at Disneyland, which is a lonely experience sometimes accompanied by the feeling you want to hurl into a dustbin.

Shin Godzilla was incredible. Solved the riddle of how to convey bureaucratic impotence while still driving the plot forward every second. Some absolutely masterful perspective shots that make it a quasi found-footage film but in a way I've never seen before

The beams destroy the bombers, their munitions, and anything else that happens to be caught up in their sweep. Godzilla will never be harmed that way again... He is still in agony.
