There is only one thing he is eager to know at the moment: ‘How do I change back?’ It is not the pause before Xichen speaks that strikes a fear deep inside him, but the sympathy his brother tries to disguise with calm. ‘It is complicated.’ Wangji waits. He is one of the foremost cultivators of his sect, in this generation or any other. He will not be dissuaded by complicated. But the longer he watches Xichen sit perfectly still, attempting to come up with the correct explanation, the more worried he becomes. Until finally Xichen says, ‘It involves love.’

But tying the ribbon around your wrist and bowing together to one of the ancestors does sound a bit like that, doesn’t it? Sort-of married, at least.’ Wei Wuxian snorts. ‘Sort-of married,’ he echoes, as the full implication of that hits him. ‘It’s a good thing we didn’t. The slight widening of Lan Zhan’s eyes says Who, me? Wei Wuxian pokes out his tongue, and flops back down onto the grass, flinging one arm over his eyes. He was basking. Also, if he keeps looking at Lan Zhan he’s going to melt or explode or do something really stupid like kiss him.

The accusation is fair, Lan Wangji knows, but it strikes him through the heart all the same. ‘What was the only thing I asked? Not to tell anyone, but especially Jiang Cheng! What happened to “Wei Ying’s secrets are his husband’s secrets”, Lan Zhan, hm? Or does that just mean my secrets are my husband’s to give away?’
