Democratic rights have grown but aren't universal. Over two-thirds now live in autocracies.

Even though democracy is declining, past gains show progress is possible. Each person is precious.

We NEED SERIOUS treatment to the fact that in recent years, in the U.S. and Europe, trust in human relationships and life satisfaction have been declining, despite the rise in GDP, and to protect democracy.
April 7, 2025 at 5:14 AM
The authors say, in Chapter 7, that low life satisfaction with low trust leads to the populist right, and low life satisfaction with high trust is the far left, and trust shapes views on immigration, redistribution, and social values.

The risks of weather/climate disasters increase worldwide as temperatures rise.

But we have solutions. Energy, industry, transport, buildings, AFOLU, and other sectors can reduce emissions of 41GtCO2e (72% of 2023’s) by 2035 up to US$200/tCO2e.

This graph shows the summation of each event frequency from 1980-2024. In 2024, reached 271, marking the max since 1980. The previous max was 242 (2023). (However, It does not mean that each event shown suffered at least $1 billion in losses).

2024 broke records, with a global average temperature of 15.10°C, 0.12°C higher than 2023. It surpassed the 1991–2020 average by 0.72°C and pre-industrial levels by 1.60°C, marking the first year to exceed 1.5°C over pre-industrial temperatures.

Daily Sea Surface Temperature, World (60°S-60°N, 0-360°E)

The upward trend that had been continuing since March 2023 finally started to show a downward trend towards the middle of 2024. I hope that this trend keeps going somehow this year as well.

2. Human-induced disturbance of green water. "Local soil moisture deviations have significantly increased since the late 19th, surpassing the Planetary Boundary around 1930 and continuing to rise since then."

Planetary Health Check 4 [Freshwater Change]:

1. Human-induced disturbance of blue water flow. "Local stream flow deviations have almost doubled since the late 19th, already surpassing the Planetary Boundary at the beginning of the 20th and continuing to rise since then."

Monitoring for Planetary Health Check 3 [Land System Change]:

Relative forest cover ranges from 100% (max potential) to 0% (no forest). Due to land use and climate change, global and regional forests have steadily declined.

2. Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production (HANPP) measures how much biomass humans take or alter in ecosystems. NPP is the organic matter plants produce after respiration, representing energy available for herbivores and other organisms in the ecosystem.

Monitoring for Planetary Health Check 2 [Biosphere Integrity]:

1. Extinctions per million species years (E/MSY) tracks extinction rates. High rates mean biodiversity loss, weakening resilience, and Earth's ability to adapt and buffer Planetary Boundaries.

2. TOA Radiative Forcing (W/m²)
Anthropogenic Radiative Forcing measures human impacts on Earth's energy balance, including CO2, GHG, aerosols, and land-use changes. It has sharply increased since the Anthropocene, driving climate change.

Monitoring for Planetary Health Check 1 [Climate Change]:

1. Atmospheric CO2 (ppm) has risen steadily since industrialization, now at its highest in 15M years. A major greenhouse gas, CO2, is emitted heavily by human activities, reaching ~420 ppm as of August 2024.

A patient (Earth) in critical condition needs regular monitoring. The Planetary Health Check tracks nine PB, providing decision-makers with data to accelerate transformations toward a safe, just future within our planet's ecological limits.

The #PlanetaryBoundaries (PB) framework identifies nine essential global boundaries regulating Earth’s systems, such as climate change, biodiversity, and water. The 2023 update confirmed that six of these boundaries have been crossed, signaling urgent action is needed.

Both SSP1 and SSP5 project optimistic human development with strong education, health, economic growth, and well-functioning institutions. In SSP1, there is an increasing shift toward sustainable practices, while SSP5 assumes this will be driven by an energy-intensive, fossil fuel-based economy.
November 21, 2024 at 1:42 AM
The U.S. mistakenly has chosen the SSP5 pathーFossil-fueled Development: A fossil-fueled world of free markets and tech progress, with strong human capital investment. Resource-intensive lifestyles prevail as the population peaks and declines, while tech solutions address environmental issues.

A graph of $1 billion U.S. weather/climate disasters by 1 Nov in 2024 shows there were 227 incidents. Of the cases, severe storms accounted for 183 (81%). Disaster incidents are nearing last year's count of 242. In Texas, 126 (+2 from 8 Aug) severe storm disasters (67%) from 1980-2024.

From an equity viewpoint, the idea that climate impact estimates favor the wealthy and current generations is unethical, and 'when life or health are at stake, all people should be considered equal, whether rich or poor, alive or yet to be born.' www.nature.com/articles/s41...

According to #IPCC AR6 SYR, vulnerability to climate change varies across populations, with higher vulnerability found in countries with lower per-capita CO2 emissions. Even in countries with lower average vulnerability, certain groups may face higher risks.

Similarly, using the global temperature vs CO2 concentration regression, the CO2 level for a 1.5°C rise was calculated as 437 ppm.

Since the cumulative emissions as of 2023 were 1,812 Gt, the remaining carbon budget to stay within a 1.5°C increase is approximately 263 Gt.
