@seanmcarroll.bsky.social - is compatibalist, emergent free will akin to a complex, deterministic software program "deciding" its outputs based on its inputs? ie. to someone who doesn't know the inner workings it decides it's output, even though it is ultimately deterministic.

@seanmcarroll.bsky.social Is a weakly emergent phenomenon always a statistical pattern of the mechanics of underlying elements on the large scale? Or is it sometimes something else?
