Shantel is the Principal Investigator for an AHRC-funded impact project that seeks to deepen and transform public understandings of African religions in Grenada. Her second book project explores the global history of the African kola nut.

She earned her PhD from SOAS, University of London, in 2017. Her first book, The Yoruba are on A Rock: Recaptured Africans and the Orisas of Grenada, will be published by Cambridge University Press in September 2025.

Exploring traditional governance institutions in post-colonial Sub-Saharan countries as potential anchor institutions, the project will seek to theoretically de-centre contemporary CWB from dominant Western narratives, and define it in an African context.

Through a combination of film analysis, interviews, and industry case studies, she highlights the creative and social impact of Nollywood’s women filmmakers. This work contributes to broader discourses on African cinema, feminist film theory, and representation in global media.

Nkechi’s PhD project in the School of Culture & Creative Arts investigates the role of female directors in Nollywood and their influence on gender representation in Nigerian cinema.

Nkechi is also the founder of Power2Her, a women-focused initiative promoting confidence, skills development and representation across media platforms.

Nkechi also has a background in linguistics and journalism, and her creative work spans both fiction and documentary forms. As an advocate for women’s voices in media, she uses film and digital storytelling to explore issues of identity, culture and empowerment.
