It's great fun teaching this short course -- and I always learn something from the data (this time, noticing voicing and aspiration on the release of [d] sounds in turn-final productions of 'oh my god')

Group picture after the midday ear-training session with (most of) our lovely international colleagues at this year's Phonetics of Talk-in-Interaction CPD course. Three days of fun analysing phonetic detail in interactional data through ear-training exercises, data sessions, and Praat demos.

'It Takes Two to Argue' a wonderful activity from a team at Language and Linguistics! Rosario Neyra, Levi Farrington, Lebo Moji and Constance Sun organised a wonderful puppet show exploring how arguments unfold and how to break them down using de-escalation strategies to resolve conflicts.
A giraffe puppet and a lion puppet The team: two humans, one human with a giraffe puppet and then one puppet (a lion) at their exhibition stand.

I'm at the Institut für Deutsche Sprache in Mannheim for a few months as a visiting researcher. Today I'm sharing some work in progress on how the phonetic and prosodic organisation of laughter helps people in conversation coordinate entry to and exit from laughter.
