UPDEPP proudly congratulates “Direk” Kyla Danelle Romero (BA Applied Psychology '23) who has earned the distinction of becoming the first #FilipinoWoman director to have her work, the 15-minute short film " #Agapito " nominated for an award at the #CannesFilmFestival!
UPDEPP proudly congratulates “Direk” Kyla Danelle Romero (who graduated from the B.A. Applied Psychology program in 2023) who has earned the distinction of becoming the first Filipino woman to have her work nominated for an award at the Cannes Film Festival. Agapito, which was written and co-directed by Romero and Arvin Belarmino, is one of eleven short films selected from among 4,781 others to be nominated for the Palme d'Or du court métrage (Short Film Palme d’Or), which is the highest prize given to a short film at the Cannes. Yet another of the 11 nominated films, “Ali”, was written by Romero and Belarmino, although it was directed by Bangladeshi filmmaker Adnan Al Rajeev. In its synopsis for the film, Rolling Stone says Agapito […] tells the story of a young bowling pin setter named Mira (Nour Hooshmand), whose days are spent manually resetting the pins of a rundown bowling alley. While the job is dangerous, Mira needs the work to support her older brother Junior (André Miguel), who lives with cerebral palsy and developmental delays. On her Instagram, Romoro describes the journey of the film as being “from the halls of the duckpin alley, to the four huge corners of the Grand Theater Lumiere.” “I dedicate this to my late father,” Romero added. “To you, papa Danny Romero. For raising me in a sports facility, surrounded by people who love what they do. Something that resonated when we made this story, set in a duckpin alley in Bulacan.” Taken by surprise when the news of the nomination came out, Belarmino and Romero’s team is currently raising funds so that more of Agapito’s cast and crew can attend the awards ceremony. The 2025 Cannes Film Festival officially begins on May 13, 2025, and the Short Film Palme d’Or will be awarded at the Palmares ceremony on Saturday, May 24, 2025 by the Jury chaired by German film director, screenwriter and producer Maren Ade. “Congratulations to Paula Joan Carreon, Arianne Kaye Cuenco, Laarni Ladea, and Marinella Ricafranca of the UPDEPP Master in Governance and Innovative Leadership (MGIL) Program! A research output spearheaded by MGIL Students Paula Joan Carreon, Arianne Kaye Cuenco, Laarni Ladea, and Marinella Ricafranca alongside UPDEPP Professors Maria Margarita R Lavides and Maria Angelica D Abad was recently published in Ministrate: Jurnal Birokrasi dan Pemerintahan Daerah, an open-access scholarly peer-reviewed journal published by the Department of Public Administration Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The study employed Design Thinking (DT) to explore the Philippine eTravel System from the users’ perspective. As discussed in the article’s abstract, “Results of data analysis revealed that the users encounter difficulties such as complicated registration procedure, malfunctions of the system, and accessibility issues specifically with individuals who are not so well versed in technology.” The authors suggested “innovations towards making the travel system more inclusive and user friendly.” With “[r]ecommendations focused on technical and administrative aspects, particularly the improvement of the interface, multilingual options, availability of steady connection within airports, and different paper-based forms for special cases.” The authors described Design Thinking (DT) as “an approach that is iterative and centered on humans in solving problems by understanding their needs, creating ideas innovatively, and testing them to arrive at meaningful and effective results” - one of many approaches explored in UPDEPP’s MGIL Program. Congratulations Doc Patrick! Associate Prof. Patrick De Leon recently received word that another research output on the TQM and ISO 9001 implementation at a Central Luzon Office of a National Government Agency, was published in the latest volume of the PREO Journal of Business and Management.
SUPPORTING QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN GOVERNANCE AND DEVELOPMENT THROUGH RESEARCH: In addition to the four different journal publications shared last week, Associate Professor Patrick C. De Leon, PhD recently received word that another research output, on the TQM and ISO 9001 implementation at a Central Luzon Office of a National Government Agency, was published in the PREO Journal of Business and Management (PREO JBM). Coincidentally, Dr. De Leon was serving as plenary/keynote speaker the City College of Angeles (CCA) Research Colloquium on the same day the journal was published, April 24, 2025. Congratulations yet again, Doc Patrick!

As far as I can tell, #UPDilimanExtensionPrograminPampanga #UPDEPP seems to be the first UP unit to have an official Bluesky account.(Someone confirm?)

Formerly UP San Fernando before moving to the Clark Freeport Zone, the sattelite campus is also known as #UPPampanga, or more commonly, #UPClark.
