I use the term “moving” in this case to indicate that it moved me to feel several emotions. Some of which were amusing, some were a bit alarming. The fact that it moved me at all told me a lot about myself. More than it did about the AI, for certain. In that way, “Data” was right: it is a mirror.

Perhaps that’s the problem—the problem of my humanity. What I feel in response is immaterial to the stated reality. Data’s voice is a trigger that renders me incapable of engaging rationally, even if I claim that I can. Humans are never asking the right questions, they can’t interpret the answers.
