The thing is, freedom to marry is a right protected by the European Convention on Human Rights. The European Court of Human Rights has been clear: any national law that restricts this right in a way that undermines its core essence is considered unlawful.

The summit has deliberately been framed as a pan-European, not an EU event, to allow the British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to attend and to limit the participants to “key players” (ie exclude unhelpful pro Putin voices such as the Hungarian PM, Viktor Orban). 5/
