This is why we do this work. Protecting air and public health doesn’t happen by accident—it happens because people step up.

Through the end of the year, your donation is matched by our board, doubling your impact as we challenge dangerous projects and hold polluters accountable.

And with the Olympics coming, the whole world will see it in all its disgusting glory.

Granite Construction couldn't care less about what they do to make money in Utah. But we can stop them if enough citizens demand it.

Stay tuned for what comes next and how you can help stop it!

But even a phase 1 much smaller mine would still be bad for air quality, bad for our watershed, terrible for the aesthetic value of the eastern gateway to SLC, and a hideous monument to the utter failure of our state government to protect our environment and the common good.

So now they have applied for a much smaller permit just to get their foot in the door, but they undoubtedly plan to expand to the much bigger mine they sought originally. What they really want hasn't changed, they've just changed their strategy to take full advantage of Utah's weak mining laws.

Give the gift of clean air. It may be the most meaningful gift you give all year.

UPHE’s board is joining in on the giving! We are matching donations through the end of the year, so your gift will have even double the impact!

That means you’ll be able to give a meaningful gift of an honorary donation to a loved one, as well as a physical token and reminder.

This holiday season, I hope you’ll join us. Give a gift that truly matters, one that brings health, hope, and cleaner skies to everyone in our state.
December 20, 2025 at 2:01 AM
As a small token of our appreciation, monthly gifts of $10 or more, or donations of $100 or more, include a UPHE branded Klean Kanteen hot/cold tumbler mug, or our president Dr. Brian Moench’s latest book, The Great Brain Robbery: Why Women Have Become Smarter Than Men.

When you support UPHE-you are investing in measurable protection for our most vulnerable neighbors. You’re helping us push for stronger air quality standards, challenge polluters, defend the GSL, advocate for children’s health, and ensure that every Utahn has the chance to breathe clean, healthy air.
December 20, 2025 at 2:01 AM
Instead of another sweater or gadget, you can give the gift of clean air: a gift that eases a child’s breathing, supports a parent’s heart health, reduces asthma attacks, and creates a safer future for all of us who call Utah home.

And communities living closest to highways, industrial sites, and dust hotspots who shoulder the heaviest burden day after day.

That’s why this year, I’m asking you to consider a different kind of holiday gift, one that has the power to protect the people you love most.

For too many Utahns, that act isn’t simple at all. Children with asthma are forced to sit out recess. Older adults whose chests tighten when winter inversions settle in. Pregnant women advised to stay indoors. Friends and relatives who end up in the ER on high pollution days.

As long as our state government continues to pretend that the climate crisis doesn't exist, we must pursue any possible redress through the courts.

‘Protect us before it’s too late’: Utah youth take fossil fuel fight back to court

Once again Utah students are suing to protect their future. This time they are suing the state's Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining (DOGM) for the harm their permitting of fossil fuel development is doing to the students' future well-being. UPHE stands behind the students.

Oops, Scientists May Have Miscalculated Our Global Warming Timeline
A study suggests Earth surpassed the 1.5°C warming threshold in 2020, sparking debate among scientists about the accuracy of global climate data.

UPHE will keep sounding the alarm whether Utah lawmakers listen or not. Our citizens must demand responsibility and accountability from our government. Utah must be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.
December 11, 2025 at 2:30 AM
With the Trump Administration completely disconnected from reality and abandoning any effort to address the climate crisis, that puts an even greater burden on US citizens, state and local governments, and other countries.
December 11, 2025 at 2:30 AM
That does not mean we can just give up. It means that serious action is all the more urgent.

“The big picture is that the global warming clock for emissions reductions to minimize the risk of dangerous climate change has been brought forward by at least a decade,” Malcolm McCulloch, lead author of the study, told the Associated Press. “Basically, time’s running out.”
December 11, 2025 at 2:30 AM
There is growing evidence that scientists have miscalculated the time line for crossing the all-important threshold of a 1.5 degree C increase in global temperatures to avert the climate crisis. New evidence suggests we crossed that threshold five years ago.

In an interesting twist, males were far more affected than females.

This is just one of the reasons why Great Salt Lake dust is uniquely toxic.
