Thanksgiving is a holiday for gratitude and gatherings for many in the U.S. For Indigenous communities, today is observed as a National Day of Mourning—a day to grieve, to speak truth, and to name the continued impacts of colonization. We honor our Indigenous friends, loved ones, fellow UUs and diverse communities throughout this nation, today and every day. We recognize the deep impacts of American colonial history and present-day white supremacy culture, and are committed to care and solidarity in the continued work of truth-telling and justice. We encourage non-Indigenous folks to make time today for honest reflection—learning the histories this holiday has hidden, supporting Indigenous-led efforts for sovereignty, healing, and liberation, and uplifting the beauty and richness of Indigenous practices—today and throughout history.
