It is autumn. A travelling itinerant recognises the mark on my arm. Rather than expose me, he teaches me a ritual to hide the stench and tells me what I am. I give him what I can to help his travel and get him out of my life.

I am left with a large gash on my right arm that will never fully heal. When the wound breaks open, it smells of sulphur and rot. My hands become unusually strong.

1488. The night of April 30th, feast day of Saint Walpurgis. I have been to a neighbouring village to attend a distant relative’s funeral. On my way home, I am delayed and forced to seek shelter next to a large rubble field, we locals call “the devil’s mill”.

In my middle years, I have an accident when one of the lashings breaks loose and I am dragged under. The crush of the timbers breaks my wrist and I spend months at a Benedictine monastery, nursed back to health by the local nuns.

Early in my life, I worked with a man from Switzerland, Alois Wandel, and spent a summer travelling up the Rhine river to Basel. We work the rafts on our way back home. (The rafts are several hundred meters long!)

When I was younger, the abbot of the local monastery hanged some of the local silver miners for trying to steal from the transport carts. Me and some other young men are deputized to remove their rotten corpses after a month.

My name is Valentin Bintner, born on the banks of the Alb river in the black forest, the year of our lord 1453.
I bind timber into rafts, floating them down-river to the next bigger town, to be transported to the great shipyards of the north sea.
