My zinnia is about to start blooming! 🌸 Also I got a shot of the monarch caterpillar's face, and I think this is the second instar. 2 down, 3 to go, then chrysalis, then butterfly!

Any caterpillar experts here? Which instar is this? The more I read the more confused I am 🐛🤔 Also the tomatillos are starting to form! Just a few days ago I saw these pinhead-sized fruits forming inside the former flower, which is now turning into the husk.

My milkweed did not only come with aphids but also a monarch caterpillar! I put the plant in a little mesh tent to keep it safe.

Is this a lacewing on my bush beans, or yet another new-to-me pest?

Today I ate my first homegrown radish! Just one month from sowing the seeds to harvesting feels like instant gratification compared to the tomatoes (let's not even talk about bell peppers).

So excited to watch the tomatoes turn red! I'm also seeing a nodule on the stem leading to each tomato with a line across the widest part. Is this the membrane that forms to lock the tomato off from the rest of the plant once it starts blushing?

My first tomatoes are blushing! I might get a harvest before blight consumes the entire plant. The copper spray looks like it is helping so there may be more :) I'm also learning about the anatomy of a bush bean flower and this banana looking thing on the inside.

My only pepper plant (I killed the other one when I tried to "help" it and pry off the seed pod). This is a 5-week old sweet Banana Pepper! 🍌🫑

Got a verbena yesterday for some color, also the bush beans are forming flowers! How long until tomatoes start to blush? They've looked like this for about 2 weeks... The radishes are 3 weeks old but no shoulder yet. I'll just keep checking several times a day :)

I started some borage and zinnia from seed, and out of the 4 that sprouted, 3 mysteriously disappeared over the course of several days. This morning the last one standing was on its side, felled by a spiderweb string that pulled too hard. Nature will never cease to amaze me.

Just caught this gorgeous monarch feasting on the invasive red valerian that comes with my rental. I've been wanting to get milkweed but it looks like the invasive stuff is also tasty.

Yesterday I saw another ladybug on my tomato, the second in a long time in this inner-city neighborhood. I was thinking too bad I don't have any aphids to feed it... Ha! Today I saw this lone aphid survivor. I hope the ladybugs come back!

A cabbage looper on a radish leaf, my OG tomato plant that started it all, and a close-up of a golden bush bean baby leaf. Gonna make coffee now and then sit next to my plants and keep looking at them.

Very pleased with my gardening progress. Everything sprouted! The tomatoes and bush beans are furthest along. The oregano is still very small, and the bell pepper is struggling to get its leaves out of the seedpod. I love checking in on everything! 💚

How does one balance a productive vegetable garden against pollinator habitat? I'm seeing tons of Monarchs and other butterflies this year. Already picked a caterpillar off my tomato plant. To apply Bt or not to apply Bt...

Daily morning coffee garden stroll update - my boyfriend's tomato plant is working on its first flower I think? 🌼 Also we should have at least 8 radishes in a few weeks! 🫜 And a new-to-me pest that laid its eggs on a nasturtium 🐛
