Some notes on Zev Handel's new book on Chinese writing:

On pp.131-132, the Jp. sentence is 幸は寝室で音楽を聴いて息子と一緒に新聞を読んだ but in the gloss (and earlier in the chapter), 一緒に is missing

In another advising meeting in my first year of grad school, he opened with:

Bill: what’s your dissertation going to be about?
Me: oh! Uh…
Bill: well, what questions keep you up at night?

And, more importantly, that when I speak with and try to understand participants, what matters is *their sense of values*, not mine.

Which means I need to learn what matters to them, and what is 'good' vs 'bad' for them. For instance, is fighting good? In some communities, yes!

Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad.

I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.

"Dead languages are referred to as such due to the grave-like voice with which they are produced by the experienced translator."

- Falstaff, Fakir
(My translation from the original Swedish)
Why is it that modern attempts at recording ancient languages (esp. of the Bronze/Iron Age) often sound so forcedly low and macho, gruff, hissing and hushing insidiously in my ear like a snake learning to talk? Why do they seldom sound like regular languages, with a regular voices?
