Zachary Gillan's foreword highlights the "occulting," or obscuring Ha uses on the terrors of the wider world, creating an effect of more localized menace for his characters, who are always the focus. I love lore, but I also love the power of the reader's imagination to furnish empty spaces.

We hardly stayed in Portland itself, actually. Immediately went waterfall-watching in the Columbia River Gorge, drove through the Hood River Valley, stayed in the high-desert town of Bend. Stayed near Crater Lake, spent time on the sea-coast—basically spent time only in the nature/rural areas
