Chiara & TheresaYour Almni Relations Team   Who is Carina? With a career spanning research, grant writing, science communication, and training, Carina Baskett knows a thing or two about navigating professional paths—which makes her an ideal person to talk about career development. During her bachelor’s and PhD studies in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in the US, Carina was involved in science outreach, mainly through radio and podcasting. This extensive practice of communication skills and thinking about the big important questions contributed to a knack for getting grants and fellowships. Three years into a postdoc fellowship at ISTA, her interest in the technical aspects of research was waning, and she applied for an unusual job that fit what she loved more about science: mentoring, communication, and professional development. She worked in this role for three years at a small interdisciplinary microbiology research center at Georgia Tech (Atlanta, US): coaching fellowship writing, organizing professional development workshops, and managing collaborative grant submissions.  In 2024, Carina and her family decided to return to Vienna for the long term. After one year as an academic program coordinator at Vetmeduni, we were thrilled to welcome her to the Vienna BioCenter as our Training and Career Development Manager in June 2025. Her career evolution shows that being a professional scientist can go far beyond the lab. Links: LinkedIn, Scholar, Website
