I reckon it’s pretty simple - you start out making a straightforward traditional remake, and then get spooked into rebooting it as a reimagining with more modern trappings, but with a small chunk of the usual budget, and everyone realises they can’t make that vision without spending a LOT more.

I feel like the first version of the remake was that, but people kicked up a fuss because it didn’t look new enough and here we are!
