Another year of reading done! December was a bit of a reading slump but my library hold for The Everlasting finally became available and it has been single-handedly ending the slump 💙📚

“A Lady For a Duke” is one of those books I remember thoroughly enjoying but was too scared to reread in case it didn’t live up to my memory upon reread. Very glad the #trr25 gave me the push I needed to pick it up because I’m over here giggling and kicking my feet just as much on the reread 🥰
He wanted to look at her like he wanted to breathe, like she was breath and he was drowning, and every moment of his not looking was a struggle towards the thing he most needed. Except once he looked, looking would not be enough. Then he would have to talk to her—draw the delicate spool of her thoughts from that smiling mouth, until he knew all the colours of her. Until he understood how a stranger could seem so familiar to him. How something in her could call to a part of him he had long though dead. How it was possible she could feel like homecoming to a man who had never before had any sense of home.

Finished my final book of 2024 last night with Heavenly Tyrant so I should be safe wrapping up this year of reading now!

If I could only get a fixed idea myself, I wouldn’t have to constantly look to other people. Trying to outguess them, to convince them of my idea of myself. Hoping that if they believe that’s who I am, then maybe I’ll be able to believe it, too. But when they do believe it, when they seem convinced that I am who I’m seeming to be—and they even approve—I inevitably feel that I’ve fooled them. That they must be pretty goddamn gullible to fall for my routines.

…convince me that being alive is an appropriate state for me to be in. Because sometimes I don’t think it’s such a bright idea. Is it worth the trouble it takes trying to live life so that someday you get something worthwhile out of it, instead of it almost always taking worthwhile things out of you?

They might not want to hurt you. They might even like you, and that would be the worst possible thing that could happen. Because what can you do with people that like you, except, of course, inevitably disappoint them?

Who do you want them to think you are? How do you think people see you? Or don’t you let them near enough to see. You make up their minds for them. Do you think that you succeed in convincing people that you are what you seem to be? You make people meet you on your own territory. You don’t help them. You let them verbally hang themselves and then feel better about yourself, your power, your own sense of worth. You have the power to alienate them and if they allow it, you might even manage to make them feel awkward and foolish—foolish for letting you affect them at all. Do you want them to like you? Or are you one of those people who “don’t care what people think.” You’re not living your life for them, so why should you give a fuck what people think? You make people come to you and, when they eventually do, you punish them with your smugness. Nothing ever out of character.

Unexpected rage licked a trail of fire up his spine. He wasn’t going to make April talk about a subject that obviously upset her, but he could act on her distress anyway. Her father wasn’t getting anywhere near her. Marcus would make fucking sure of that. He hoped Brent Whittier had a stick or a chew toy available, because the Well-Groomed Golden Retriever had come to play.

It would take time. Effort. But so had everything else he’d achieved over almost four decades, and no matter what he’d been told as a child, he wasn’t and had never been lazy. Just unsure, or not quite brave enough to do what was necessary.
