First we catch the fish, then we fry them - Venturelli lab serving up fresh, local, wild caught fish at the @ballstate.bsky.social #homecoming. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Never stop sampling. These students are learning to measure river flow and discharge in limnology @ballstate.bsky.social

This semester’s R Boot Camp in @ballstate.bsky.social‬ biology’s stats class kicked off outside due to a fire drill. Students in the course use R to explore key concepts, run common stats (e.g., t-test, ANOVA regression), and be competitive for jobs after graduating.

Got invited to this. Walked in not knowing anyone. Walked out with new friends and a few stories. Thanks, @nature.org and @iccb2025.bsky.social!

Had a great time in Perth talking fishing apps, survey science with Karina Ryan et al., (DPIRD), and NGO RecFishWest. Sample frames, trust, and the spectrum of engagement. Next up: Western Australia holiday, then Brisbane to prep for an eval of behaviour change efforts on app data quality.

Hire new MSc Rocco Boyd (stat & GIS whiz)! App data suggest invasive #Hydrilla isn’t v. good for #Florida #largemouth bass fishing. H doesn't attract more anglers or make larger bass - native veg is better. H mats do get fished for slightly larger bass, but not enough to justify limiting H control.

Onward & upward (bc #wefly)! @mackensieshears.bsky.social started in ed, switched to aquatics & fisheries, & was an asset to the lab for 20 mo - helping w main projects, side projects, teaching, service, & snacks. Thx for everything, best of luck, you’re missed, & come back any time!

Very proud of Paton Willbanks for successfully defending her thesis on methods for using app data to monitor for changes in marine fish assemblage and species distributions. Except that we now have a Paton-sized hole in the lab. Saying bye to great students is one of the hardest parts of this job.

Our lab unwinds by playing bar trivia with friends and family most weeks. We are the Aquaholics. This week’s game was a little sad because it was the last time that this cohort would play together. Even sadder is that we lost…by a lot.

Lab members @mackensieshears.bsky.social, Paton Willbanks, and Rocco Boyd racked up wins at this year's Department of Biology Awards Ceremony. They were recognized for their hard work and dedication to generating knowledge that will help to monitor and manage #recreationalfisheries. ❤️💪🐟

“Dr” Boyd at the FloridaWCC #Invasive #plant Mgmnt review. He applied machine learning to agency & #fishing app data (217 lake-yrs!) & found that native veg spp >> Hydrilla in 3 of 4 categories. Natives make ⬆️ #bass, attract ⬆️ anglers, cause ⬆️ fishing success. But we do find ⬆️ big bass near Hydrilla

Snapped this pic at the start of last week's FWC meeting in Orlando. "Dr" Boyd is a MSc student, but the label is appropriate - he’s an amazing student who is writing up THREE data chapters. Whoever hires him is getting bargain.

It was an honour & pleasure to be involved in this @nature.org -led, global assessment of app data as a means of identifying impt marine rec fishing areas. The assessment went well, so we're planning follow-up research to help protect these areas from other sectors. oceanwealth.org/wp-content/u...

Indiana @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social is heating up! This is @amuehler.bsky.social‘s famous slide. We know that aquatic #invasivespecies are bad, but his results suggest that we can use app and mobile location data to prioritize management efforts such as monitoring and cleaning stations.

The holy grail of rec fishing surveys: can we use app data to estimate effort and species-specific catch rates on par with creel surveys? Preliminary results are very promising, says @mackensieshears.bsky.social at the Indiana @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social meeting.

We can use app data to generate high-res connectivity networks among lakes for informing aquatic #invasivespecies management efforts, but are these networks valid? Tamara is looking into it by comparing to a network based on access point survey data in Illinois. Indiana @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social

Poster time at Indiana @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social. Olivia is moving into a new phase of fishing app research. Do different apps used in the same fishery yield different results? Spoiler alert: we should probably standardize!

What happens to fishing patterns when you change a regulation? A difficult question to answer with conventional data, so Wade is trying with app data from before and after Minnesota changed statewide pike regs in 2018. Another great talk at Indiana @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social
February 18, 2025 at 10:16 PM
Interesting results from Rocco at Indiana @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social: weak evidence from app data that #invasive #hydrilla are good (or bad) for largemouth bass size, or that anglers are attracted to infested lakes. BUT the opposites are true for some native vegetation species.

Next up at Indiana @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social: Paul’s presentation about using app data to map recreational marine fishing around the globe in collaboration with @nature.org

It’s Indiana @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social time! First up is Josh’s presentation about using market segments to understand dynamics in fisheries license sales.

Third of 5 medium point BIC Round Sticks drained! Started this project May 2017. A linear model suggests that longevity decreases 96 days per pen. I’m either getting busier, or pens lose longevity when not in use. Pen 4 is predicted to quit in 750 days, so tune in ~12 Feb 2027!

Another great #midwestFW! Lab highlights include talks by Aaron (#AIS) and Josh (market segment analysis of license sales), poster by Mackensie (app data to supplement creel surveys), and Fenske nominations to Aaron and Mackensie. Way to go, team! 👏
