was gonna do a thread but it was way too long....anyway i have some thoughts that i've been thinking about wrestling as a sport and its complications
Something that I’ve been thinking about and trying to work through after reading the “your fave is a carnie” post and now with the T-boy wrestling disaster is about how pro wrestling is spoken about in popular media and the sport/narrative medium/whatever you want to call it itself, and how it feels that unless you really understand wrestling, there’s always going to be a fundamental disconnect. Because of that disconnect, there’s no way to actually talk about it in a way that feels fruitful or different than how it’s been talked about within the last decade, more or less. For example, when I’ve read articles about the usage of the performance aspect of wrestling within right-wing political spaces and how WWE in particular is a space that emboldens and upholds projects of white supremacy and right-wing discourse, there’s more of a conversation around how pro wrestling is used as a platform, rather than the mechanics that exist within the medium itself that allows these things to proliferate. Writers without historical context don’t have an understanding of professional wrestling as originating in the carnival circuits, its performers acting with the intention of conning an audience to make their money. The back door deals and structures of secrecy during the days of the territories (deciding who wins or who isn’t allowed to lose, when belts are dropped, the fear and intimidation promoters directed towards performers) were all intended to portray a certain image without losing the attention and funding from an audience. Even the idea of kayfabe, of a performer that you are not meant to truly know because this is their work and you want to pay to see them. Even if the gestures appear real, or the feelings that the wrestler has towards their work is real, it’s a warped reality that we as audience members only have access to. It’s a sport that depends on intimidation, violence, and subterfuge in order to function. When right-wing politicians use that discourse, it’s …
