Morris Music House helped bring jazz to streets of N.O.
Morris Music House, circa 1952. Anyone strolling down South Rampart Street could hear New Orleans music blaring from large speakers in front of Morris Music House. “As big bands and ‘race records’ turned toward rhythm and blues in the late 1940s, the store’s speakers amplified the new sound,” WWOZ’s “A Closer Walk” states. “Their motto was ‘First with the latest hits!’” Located at the corner of Common and South Rampart streets, Morris Music House started out as Morris Music Co. It was founded by Morris Karnofsky, who grew up in a Jewish household on the same street in the predominantly Black neighborhood.
