Poking my head above the battlements briefly - this bluethroat gave me some of the last half-usable shots from my poor long-suffering Panasonic 100-300ii as its motors gave out. 🪶

Most of these shots went badly wrong because I didn't notice I'd accidentally changed the wrong settings, but a couple were sort of salvageable. Red kite trying (and ultimately failing) to catch one of these Egyptian goslings that had gotten separated. 🪶

I've not had much luck with bee-eaters and the light this year (despite the blue you see here) but they're certainly fun to watch. 🪶

We'll have to settle for birds with reddish parts or "red" in the name if I'm not going to resort to zoo photos, I suppose.
A pair of black storks rooting around shallow water in the woods. They have fairly bright red legs and beaks, I promise. Hey, it's a red kite in flight again. This one's angling its wings, about to maybe dive a short distance, and the left wing (closer to the camera) is casting a fun shadow on the right wing. Red-backed shrike posing on a branch. I really enjoy watching these guys. A European nuthatch, with its reddish underside, clinging sideways to a small branch.

Couple great reed warblers for bedtime. 🪶

Another great reed warbler, later in the summer, among some green reeds for a change. Look, it's not called the great variety of locations warbler. Okay, fine, here's one on a small branch. Common buzzard hanging out on a hay bale. Ongoing perching dispute between a red kite and a crow; the kite's pose is particularly dynamic and/or silly, tail fanned out and twisted aside, wings spread downward from our perspective. Female red-backed shrike hanging out on a small branch. I think shrikes should count 😉 Black kite taking flight from a bare branch against a blue sky.

European bee-eaters! Hardly seeing them away from their main nearby colony this year, where they're harder to photograph without trespassing or otherwise getting too close to their nests.

a hare hanging out on a lawn next to some flowers, as you do cornflowers and poppies and various grasses scarlet dragonfly chilling on a small branch. hey these guys were hardly ever seen north of the alps until the 90s or so. I'm sure that means nothing red kite taking flight and glaring at me I guess
