She should be so embarrassed – mortified – but his calm keeps her from freaking out. “What is it,” he asks carefully, “that’s gotten into you? Do you know?” Powder had not given enough thought to it before, to put into words why exactly she was doing what she was doing. There was just a feeling, strong and not to be ignored. Silco asks, “Is it a need to... to buck expectations?” Now her mind is under a microscope, she knows what he guessed is the truth. Hearing it spoken aloud eases something inside Powder. “I think... I know... that I’ve been holding myself back. I guess I can’t do that any more. No matter what happens.” “I knew that feeling at your age. Be careful, Powder. Be very careful of what you ask for.” Too late for that, she thinks.

It makes him exhale in amusement, thinking: if she manages to eliminate Claudia and make it out alive, he might have to keep the girl for himself.
