“Why should I care if criminals are killed?” I see this comment everywhere. Here’s why it matters: these boat strikes aren’t war, they’re law enforcement. When the government can execute people without trial, the rule of law collapses. Due process protects Americans and U.S. service members.

Via @theUCMJattorney: New info reveals the shipwrecked survivors were defenseless. The law says even in "war," they weren't targetable. This isn’t a Non-International Armed Conflict, so the strikes are under human rights and criminal law, not the Law of Armed Conflict. It’s murder, not a war crime.
