Words don't mean anything anymore, huh?

AI is not a cheap alternative to labor. It's quite expensive and we are all paying for it.

Bloomberg research found wholesale electricity up ~270% in areas near data centers

It doesn't seem like nearly enough people are taking it seriously

One A.I. image isn't too much energy, but 5 million videos? Per day/hour/minute whatever. It's not sustainable

AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

Back in the day people used to have a slide at the end of their presentations saying "and that's how the brain works" as an inside joke about Hinton since he was known to talk confidently out of his ass.

Now, the Nobel committee brought this upon us like they give the peace prize to genociders.

anyway, here is 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics winner Geoffrey Hinton discussing what we know about large AI models on 60 Minutes.

They gave the physics prize to the dude who said that ChatGPT is the world's butterfly and GPT3 was a caterpillar.

The dude who told us in 2018 that radiologists should cease to go to school because the profession was gonna be out in 5 years. But 5 years later he just moved on to the next lie.

Haven't paid Nintendo Switch Online in a while. I can play Mario Maker 3DS on pretendo. Mario Maker levels was really the only reason I had an NSO subscription in these later years.

Why is this needed? Weren't algorithmic recommendations a well-solved problem long before LLMs got hyped to the stratosphere in 2022?

Same folks who make you RTO because they are so worried about productivity will also force MS Teams which is an actual productivity black hole.

CHATGPT: I understand where you're coming from. You worked really hard to get here, and now it's time to enjoy the fruit of your labors.

ISILDUR: So I should keep it? Elrond says I shouldn't

CHATGPT: The ring is precious. Sometimes friends don't have your best interests at heart.

The "AI" responses that Google gives about me and my work are consistently error-prone, which I know because I am me. If I know Google's "AI" responses give incorrect answers about things I know about, I can't trust it to give correct answers about things I don't know. So, no, I don't use it.

I’m surprised you don’t use ai answer engines in research you currently do with Google

But make no mistake, moving away from Unity will be a major reduction in my User Experience. I dunno what happened but Desktop Environments simply don't respect Vertical space. They either waste the vertical space or they implement features that "save" space but in a way that also loses function.

Might tour around and try alternatives based on GTK. I like the Mate apps. But Mate itself is kind of too barebones for me. Might give Cosmic a try, but it strikes me as too GNOME-like and if that's the case I might as well pick GNOME since it has more theme support.

All QT themes no matter how hard I try to find something different always look chunky and wrong. GTK is also just a lot more widespread in use and support and has a better licensing situation.

- I gave KDE a serious try, really. But it drives me insane. And the promise that it would ever be customizable enough to do combined menu/title bars like in Unity never came to fruition. But most importantly, KDE has a huge flaw and it's called QT
vexorian.dev
Meh I think I'll might go back to GNOME. This is truly a dark turn.

- Unity is still the superior UX. But the lack of support from theme and app makers is making it increasingly more of a hard sell. I'll really miss the shared title menu bar but it's becoming too much trouble.

Dunno what to tell you about the font. That's how all papers made with LaTeX tend to look like.
Here's the arxiv, enjoy. arxiv.org/abs/2507.07935
