English teacher, Head of Year, and aspiring SENCo. Based in the South West after cutting my teeth in the North East.
Had a lovely time at the #tedwraggawards last night! It felt really special to win the Staff Teamwork Award as an English Department. For me, our Department is all about love and this #worldmentalhealthday it seems really apt to be recognised for this. This team have been my safe place. So much love

In a week that has made me ruminate a little more than usual...my week was made when a gaggle of y8 girls stayed behind at the end of the day to show me their cats and get psyched for #TS12 #thelifeofashowgirl

Probably one of the most complex issues I deal with as a HoY because there are just. So. Many. Moving. Parts.

On Friday, Y11 had their last English exam so we threw them a disco party breakfast. Not sure if I wore enough sequins? 🤔 #englishteacher #gcse #discoparty #lovewhereyouwork

#litpaper1 today. Never known so many bright smiles through the door this morning as I brandished my giant Santa and told students to pat him on the head for good luck. Kids seem happy. It worked. Now to find a mascot for #litpaper2 ...

Since September I have been begging my Y11s to read for pleasure.

Imagine my delight this week when one of them excitedly burst out mid-lesson "My next set of books is being delivered today!"

Couldn't even be mad that she'd checked her phone.

ACOTAR if anyone's curious 😅

Student: "What even is trigonometry?"
Me (overexcited): "SOHCAHTOA!"
Student:.....
Me (WAY too proud): *explains*
Student: "Well that's just stupid; I don't even tan."

Student turns up: jacket under blazer, no shirt. Send him to get a shirt. Comes back. Sits. "This isn't my blazer! My phone is in my pocket with no password!" cue pandemonium from Y9. Student rips open lining of blazer to look at the phone in there to see whose it is.

It's his. It's his blazer.

"Miss! He's trying to chew my ear!"
Forgot I was teaching year 9s and not 9-year-olds for a minute there 🙄🤣

Me. It's me. Procrasti-clean anyone?
Word of the day is ‘quiddler’ (18th century): one who focuses on unimportant issues while avoiding the important ones, or who fiddles/plays golf while Rome burns.

So lucky to work in a school where it's so normal to celebrate eachother. Genuinely very humbled to win this ❤️ #humblebrag #schoolenvironment

“Too often, the burden of ensuring children attend school falls entirely on teachers and leaders, who are then held accountable for absences beyond their control."
The growth in the attainment gap between poorer 16-year-olds and their better-off peers can be 'entirely explained' by higher absences for disadvantaged pupils, EPI research suggests
Poor pupil absences 'entirely explain' attainment gap growth
Disadvantage gap would be four months smaller at age 16 if absence rates were similar

I was lucky enough to hear @sendmattersuk.bsky.social speak at a SEND and Pastoral Lead conference in Buckfast in the summer; and what he had to say absolutely confirmed my aspiration to SENCO (one day.. 😅)
‘SENDCOs are busier than ever. SEND Registers are growing. Yet some schools are taking these demands in their stride, rising to the challenges it brings. The magic ingredient? A whole-school approach to SEND.’
