Good to see the BL's problems finally getting attention. But research libraries are also crucial components of our national STEM infrastructure, managing access to digital content, open access repositories, and research data. Libraries are a lot more than the laboratories of the arts & humanities.

I get what you're saying, but I spend my life trying to get people to understand you can't analyse any data well if you don't pay attention to how it was produced....

Where is this from? It looks like a fun read!

I'll point out many scientists do write lay summaries as part of funding applications & reports to funders or reports for study participants, but effective Comms is far more than just writing a lay summary, and takes a lot more time. As in a proper job in itself.

Because there is insufficient funding. Science would be so much better in so many cases if the statistics was done in collaboration with actual statisticians. This is not a great argument for adding communication on top. However.....

Because ideally scientists would work with actual statisticians too, rather than also have to do the statistics.

The caption for figure 2 is similarly shocking. Did they bother to ask her whether she "exists rather than lives"?!?

Ok, well at least it's clean. I've had the other experience [shudder] and there's nothing quite like carefully inspecting your bedding before getting in, while standing on your shoes because you don't want to touch the floor (in a town with no other available rooms)

Uh oh....... That doesn't sound good....

She was only 22 and an intern. The power dynamic was appalling.

Not taking that bet: there will have been lots of competent data people saying this over the years, but unfortunately the solution is never shiny enough for them to take it seriously.

Unfortunately, my experience is it's the full professors you have to tell this to......

Really interesting interview and quite revealing. I fear you're right...

Yes: why would I wait for it to boil on the hob? It's much quicker to boil in the kettle and then pour the water into the saucepan
