Some pics from yesterday's 'politics in the pub' event in Dandenong on Labor's complicity in Israel's genocide in Gaza, featuring Dandenong councillor and Palestine advocate Rhonda Garad and VS's Jack McMahon. Thanks to everyone who made it along!

Two million on the streets in Italy for yesterday's general strike for Palestine. Absolutely wonderful to see the power of the working class mobilised against Israel's genocide. An example for the rest of the world to follow! ✊ 🇵🇸 ❤️

Part of the purpose of the VS Socialist Workers' Caucus is help rebuild the kind of union movement that might actually consider serious strike action around issues like this - its next meeting is on Tuesday 21st Oct, 6:30pm at the VS volunteer centre at 83 Sydney Rd, Brunswick.

Italy's two biggest unions have called a general strike for this Friday in response to Israel's interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza. An example unions here should be following! If you're a member of a union, email or call them and encourage them to take action.

The Sumud Flotilla is approaching Gaza and reportedly about to be intercepted by the Israeli Navy. The safety of participants in the flotilla depends on global solidarity! VS encourages its members and supporters to attend the solidarity rally called for 6pm tonight at the State Library. ✊🇵🇸

Something to be proud of. ✊🇵🇸

A key demand of the campaign is that institutions reverse their adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism and other repressive measures being used to silence our opposition to genocide.
vicsocialists.bsky.social
The campaign aims to unite workers, students, artists, journalists, lawyers, advocates and community members committed to defending the right to speak out against injustice.

It was wonderful to hear from such a staunch group of activists who have been using their platforms to make a stand for Palestine and who have become the target of attempted repression by pro-Israel forces as a result.

The neo-Nazi involvement was obvious from the start but good nevertheless to see the Age report on this. "Footage analysed by this masthead as well as... The White Rose Society shows neo-Nazi leadership played a key role at every major march held in capital cities on August 31."

It's the same in Australia too - where the wealth of the richest 200 people increased by 160 percent in the decade from 2015 to 2025, to $667.8 billion. They're squeezing us for every penny and spending some of that money trying to convince us to blame anyone else but them!
A screenshot of a post on X by @theserfstv. The post quotes a post by @MorePerfectUS which reads: "U.S. billionaires reached a record breaking $7.6 trillion in wealth as of September 2025, an increase of $4.7 trillion in the less than eight years. Most of that wealth hasn’t been taxed and won’t be taxed under our current system."
The post reads: "This is why everything sucks. It's not trans people. It's not immigrants. You are being robbed blind before your eyes and those same people also own all the tech and media networks to tell you that the cause is not them"

Reminder! Join us this Sat 20th Sept, 2pm in Brunswick for this important forum. Those speaking up for Palestine have been censored, disciplined, slandered, repressed and criminalised, but we won't be silenced! Tickets ($10) and registration here: victoriansocialists.org.au/civicrm-even....

Right-wing logic: saying mean things about Charlie Kirk is beyond the pale and you should be fired. But describing the genocide in Gaza as a potential 'real estate bonanza' and discussing how to share the spoils is just fine. So many levels of hypocrisy and outright evil here.

The Age is reporting that the Victorian government may ditch group voting tickets for the 2026 state election. VS strongly supports this. The GVT system is profoundly undemocratic and allows unprincipled operators (on both the left and right), to game the system behind the backs of voters.
A screenshot of an article in the Age. The headline reads: 'Victoria’s balancing act between abolishing preference harvesting and getting things done'

The text reads: 'Momentum is building within the government to overhaul the way Victorians vote for upper house MPs and stop so-called preference harvesting that allows micro parties to get a seat in parliament with minuscule support.
Seven Labor sources, unable to speak publicly about party matters, told The Age that while no final decisions had been made, it was increasingly likely the government would seek to abolish group voting tickets by February next year.'

Great to see the familiar face of VS Bendigo councillor Owen Cosgriff in the news. "A Bendigo councillor has fired a warning to his colleagues that their cohort will be remembered as 'the council that killed the writers festival' if they don't conduct a transparent review of what went wrong."
